Essex 414 & 200-8 v Australia 562 & 221

1540: Australia have defeated Essex at Chelmsford after a dominant afternoon display of bowling.

Essex lost two quick wickets this morning when, chasing 370, they ripped into the Aussie bowling attack with Jesse Ryder scoring 27 off Josh Hazlewood's first six balls.

But soon after Jaik Mickleburgh was undone by a lbw from Hazlewood, Mitchell Starc destroyed Ryder's middle stump with the lively Kiwi back in the hut after scoring a quick-fire 37 off 19 balls.

Starc then took out Bopara (42), snaring the skipper leg before wicket after his runs alongside Ryan ten Doeschate had steadied the ship, and removed James Foster for a duck.

Hazlewood then took a trio of quick wickets, getting Matt Salisbury (8) caught behind and both ten Doeschate (61) and Jamie Porter (0) leg before wicket in successive balls.

Nathan Lyon dismissed Aron Nijjar for the eighth Essex wicket and the final one, as opener Tom Westley, who scored 144 in the first innings, did not bat because of bruised ribs and Nick Brown was also absent through injury.

The hosts' bowlers wrapped up the Aussie second innings on Saturday morning in half an hour with Porter snaring the final two wickets - Peter Siddle and Lyon.

A cloud will be hovering over the Australians with the news that injury has forced paceman Ryan Harris to retire. Not the best with four days until the start of the Ashes.

England's players will enjoy reading about the vulnerability of Australia's batsmen after Michael Clarke's side closed on 212-8 on Friday with only the skipper making a half-century.
