Michael Vaughan believes Adil Rashid can be England's key weapon in the upcoming Ashes if he is managed correctly.
The Yorkshire leg-spinner may not be named in the squad for the first Investec Test on Wednesday, with Moeen Ali likely to retain his place as the side's first-choice spinner.
But after impressing during the one-day series win over New Zealand and subsequently for his county, Vaughan is hopeful the 27-year-old will play a part in the five-Test series.
"He needs managing, captaining and bowling at the right time. I would say first innings on good pitches you'd have to manage him very well," said the former England captain.
"A top order player with anything worth their weight in gold would have a little bit of a look at him and probably attack him.
"That's when the captain has to come in and say 'right, it's not quite working, let's save him for that tail'. The second innings when it's a bit crustier he comes into his own.
"With the way that he bowls and the way England have really struggled to get rid of tails... it's something different that England might surprise Australia with.
"I wouldn't expect him to whip through the top order in the first innings, but with careful management and careful field settings he certainly can play a big part.
"When you go into an Ashes series you have to be so confident in your own ability and you have to be on top of that confidence level to compete.
"I'd see how Rashid goes this week in the four-day game at Durham and if he comes out and flicks them out nice and gets a few wickets, I'd just throw him straight in as a young chap who's confident.
"He's on the crest of that one-day wave, I'd just give a game and just play him."
