Harry Gurney looks to secure England World Cup place in Sri Lanka tour

Harry Gurney believes he can take full advantage of Stuart Broad and James Anderson's absence in England's one-day series against Sri Lanka.

Gurney, 28, knows the seven-match tour gives him the opportunity to show the selectors what he can bring to the table ahead of next year's World Cup.

The left-arm seamer made his England debut this May against Scotland and the one-day international specialist has already made an impression in his first seven appearances.

"I think I have got a lot to offer. I am the only left armer involved in this squad," Gurney told Sky Sports News HQ after England's second training session of the tour.

Harry Gurney is confident of forcing his way into England's one day squad for next year's World Cup in Australia and New Zealand

"It's been coming out quite well in the nets. In those games hopefully I will offer something a little bit different. When the selectors sit down to make that squad hopefully I get my place."

Rain

Heavy rain has been an issue so far in Sri Lanka, but Gurney is hopeful that will not be a problem as the tourists prepare for their first warm-up match against Sri Lanka A on Friday ahead of the opening one-day international next Wednesday.

Gurney said: "Being English, we're all used to a bit of rain. So that doesn't bother anyone really.

"Turning up and having slightly damp footholds is not something any of us are fazed by.

"Most of the ODIs have reserve days, so I think we'll probably get a conclusion in most of if not all the games.

"If there are shorter games, it gives us the opportunity to go out there and maybe approach it with a different tactic.

"You're going to get presented with circumstances like that in World Cups. So why not be prepared for it?"

Broad is still recovering from knee surgery and Anderson has been rested to look after his knees.

Gurney wished Anderson a speedy recovery, but admits unexpected injuries offer him a chance to secure his place on the plane for the World Cup which starts in February.

He said: "Yeah, I guess with Jimmy dropping out reasonably late on and not being replaced it means that all of us seamers that are in the squad will get more opportunity and more time in the limelight to show what we've got.

"I am taking that as a massive positive from our perspective and hopefully Jimmy recovers quickly and is ready."
