Coach Waqar Younis backs Pakistan to do well in Test series against Australia

Pakistan coach Waqar Younis believes his team will fare better in the upcoming Test series with Australia despite being whitewashed in the one-day internationals.

Younis’s side were hammered 3-0 in the United Arab Emirates which included a one-run defeat in the final match when they needed just two runs to win off the final over.

They now face the Aussies in a two-match Test series which starts next Wednesday in Dubai.

Younis is hopeful his side can rise to the occasion against the number one-ranked Test team despite their miserable record against them.

The 42-year-old said: "I am hoping for something good to happen in the Tests.

"It's a different ball game and we have experience back in the side with Younis Khan and Azhar Ali, so I am hoping that we start delivering now."

Pakistan have not beaten Australia in a Test series since 1994 when Younis’s bowling inspired them to a 1-0 win after he took seven wickets in the victory in Karachi.

After that win, they lost 13 straight Tests against the Aussies.

They face a tougher challenge with the absence of spinner Saeed Ajmal, who was banned last month because of an illegal bowling action.

Younis admitted it will take time to recover from the loss of Ajmal, who has taken 178 wickets in 35 Tests.

He added: "It's going to be hard and it’s going to take a little time. It's a big hole when Ajmal is not there when you are playing on slow and dry pitches here.”
