England's head coach Peter Moores is confident Alastair Cook is the man to lead the team

Peter Moores has backed Alastair Cook to stay on as England captain and believes that the opener still commands respect in the dressing room.

Following the 95-run defeat to India, England have now gone 10 Test matches without a win under Cook’s leadership including a 5-0 whitewash in the winter’s Ashes series in Australia and the left-hander’s own form has also dropped off alarmingly in recent months.

As England's cricket selectors name the squad for the third Test against India, they must decide whether to keep Alastair Cook as captain.

However, his coach remains confident that the skipper is the right man to turn things around, starting with the third Test at the Ageas Bowl in Southampton.

“Cooky carries an enormous amount of respect in that dressing room not only as a player, his record goes before him, but also as a man and how he goes about his stuff,” he said.

“I think that stands him in good stead and Alastair is determined to build that team and be part of that. My job is to support that and do that with him along with the rest of the guys who are selected to go ahead and start playing winning cricket for England.”

Challenged on England’s form poor, Moores stood firm and insisted that there was still much to play for in the series with India.

“We haven’t lost the series, we’ve lost the game and there’s a difference,” he added. “We’re playing a series now, I wasn’t in Australia, and we 1-0 down with three Tests to play so I think common sense is to think ‘how can we go to Southampton and win that Test match'.”
