Middlesex spinner Ollie Rayner has been added to the England Lions squad for the tour of Sri Lanka as cover for the injured Simon Kerrigan.
With Kerrigan's availability for the tour still unclear after a back complaint sustained during a training camp at the National Cricket Centre in Loughborough, off-spinner Rayner has been promoted from standby.
Rayner, 28, took 46 wickets at 22.04 in the LV= County Championship last season and has now joined the queue of slow bowlers jostling for position in the England pecking order following Graeme Swann's retirement.
Kerrigan, who endured a nightmare Test debut against Australia last August and is battling to stay on the England radar, may still play a part in Sri Lanka but must first prove his fitness.
ECB performance director David Parsons said: "Simon has progressed very well over the past week and we remain hopeful that he will be able to join up with the tour party later in the tour following an assessment from the medical staff at Old Trafford next week."
The Lions arrive in Colombo on January 27, playing two three-day warm-ups ahead of three four-day matches against Sri Lanka A.
