Matt Prior was passed fit to play for England in the first Ashes Test - and was immediately pushed into action after Australia won the toss and opted to bat first at the Gabba.
The wicketkeeper-batsman had missed the final warm-up fixture with a calf problem but came through on the morning of the match to be cleared for action.
The tourists also, as expected, named Chris Tremlett as their third seamer. The Surrey bowler beat off competition from Steven Finn and Boyd Rankin to play alongside new-ball pair James Anderson and Stuart Broad.
The trio will get an early chance to impress in the series after skipper Alastair Cook called incorrectly, giving Australia counterpart Michael Clarke the chance to have a bat.
"We would have liked to have batted first - here the first hour is crucial," said Cook.
The hosts selected Nathan Lyon in their final XI, the spinner getting the nod ahead of bowling all-rounder James Faulkner. Australia also hand a debut to batsman George Bailey, who will come in at no 6 in the order.
