Young Australia fast bowler Pat Cummins has been forced to quit Australia A's tour of South Africa after suffering another setback to his injury-plagued career.

The 20-year-old made a remarkable Test debut against South Africa at Johannesburg in 2011, taking 6-79 and hitting the winning runs in a Man of the Match performance.

But he has missed the last two Australian domestic seasons with back and foot injuries and has played only six first class matches in three years.

Cummins was also sent home from Australia's one-day tour of England last year with a side strain.

Australia A physiotherapist Kevin Sims said: "Pat reported some left rib/back pain during the Australia A game against India A last week.

"With only Wednesday's final remaining in the series, the decision was made for him to return to Australia to assess the injury."
