Joe Root is confident England can build on their first Test victory over New Zealand when the action heads to Headingley.

The Yorkshireman played a key role in the 170-run rout at Lord's, scoring 40 in the first innings before following it up with a crucial 71.

On top of that Root picked up a couple of catches as England moved 1-0 up in the two-Test series.

Root out to impress

And after that morale-boosting win, Root can't wait for the action to get underway on his home pitch on Friday.

"The guys played exceptionally well over the week," he told Sky Sports. "That last day was really good so we are taking a lot of confidence from that into this week.

"We want to win and we will definitely be going out there to do that. We want to prepare as best as we can and hopefully we can get things right and start off well."

The match will be Root's first Test appearance at Headingley and he is relishing the chance to play in front of his friends and family.

"It is amazing. It is great to have the opportunity to be here and I have loved every minute of it so far," he said.

"The wicket varies from game to game. This year quite a lot of runs have been scored on it so it will be interesting to see how it goes this week."
