Mahendra Singh Dhoni: Hit winning runs in Mohali
Mahendra Singh Dhoni paid tribute to his batting line-up after India wrapped up a 3-0 Test series victory over Australia with one match to play.
The home side beat the tourists by six wickets in Mohali to close on a whitewash in the four match series, as they chased down their fourth innings target of 133 with ease.
Dhoni hit the winnings runs himself, clobbering three consecutive fours to end the game, and although he was keen to praise the team, he had a special mention for Murali Vijay and Shikhar Dhawan.
The pair put on 289 for the first wicket in the first innings, with Dhawan's 187 the highest score by an Indian on debut, and the first Test hundred by a debutant Indian opener.
"It was one of the best batting exhibitions when it comes to batting in pairs, from Vijay and Shikhar," Dhoni said. "Especially Shikhar, on his debut, the way he batted.
"It is always important to get a good start in your first game. Your first game you are a bit nervous, but he handled it well.
"The coming times will be slightly tougher because he will have his own expectations."
The player himself was obviously delighted with his effort which he says he will never forget.
"It's a dream come true. When I entered, I was nervous for three-four balls. Once I got into my rhythm, I played my natural game," he said.
"Vijay did a great job too. I wanted to stay at the crease as long as possible, I didn't want to throw my wicket away. I will cherish this for the rest of my life."
