Third Test: Play on day one in Mohali abandoned due to heavy rain

Michael Clarke: Had been set to bat at No 3

The opening day's play in the third Test between India and Australia has been abandoned due to rain in Mohali.

No play had been possible before the umpires decided to call time at the Punjab Cricket Association Stadium - and the weather will have done little to lift the mood in the Australia camp.

Australia's hopes of bouncing back from two heavy defeats in the first two matches of the four-match series had already been hit by the off-field rift that had seen James Pattinson, Shane Watson, Usman Khawaja, and Mitchell Johnson all banned.

And with Matthew Wade also injured, Australia coach Mickey Arthur had been left with 12 players to pick from for the match.

Brad Haddin was expected to take over behind the stumps, with all-rounder Glenn Maxwell reportedly the man to miss out. Watson's absence meant captain Michael Clarke was set to move up the order to bat at No 3.
