Stand-in skipper Eoin Morgan raring to go ahead of England's T20 series in India

Great opportunity for Morgan

Eoin Morgan: leading England's T20 side in absence of Stuart Broad

Eoin Morgan is raring to go after nearly two months carrying drinks when he captains England in the first of two T20 internationals against India in Pune this afternoon.

Morgan was an unused member of England's victorious Test squad but now steps up to take charge of the T20 side as regular skipper Stuart Broad is at home nursing an injured left heel.

"My expectations for the guys are quite evident - to perform and show the courage and skill that they have done in domestic cricket and produce it on the big stage," Morgan said.

"It's a great opportunity for me. Especially in these two games against one of the best sides in the world in their own back yard. It's certainly going to be a challenge but I'm looking forward to it."

The Dublin-born left-hander knows runs - and lots of them - is the only way he can force his way back in the Test team.

"Given the opportunity to get back in the (Test) team, I'd back myself. I'm only going to do that through weight of runs," he added.

"Everything starts tomorrow, it's my first opportunity in two or three months."

India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni is hoping a change of scenery can rejuvenate his players after they surrendered a 1-0 lead to lose the Test series 2-1, England's first triumph in the country since 1985.

Dhoni said: "It is demanding when you have to switch the formats, especially as Test cricket is completely different from this format, where you have to hit from the very first ball and patience - at times - means maybe three deliveries!

"But as international cricketers you are supposed to stand up to the demands of the game. We are right there.

"Maybe one more practice session would have helped but this is the only practice session we are getting, so we have to make the most out of it."

What will the result be in the T20 series between India and England?

  • 2-0 to India
  • 2-0 to England
  • 1-1 draw
