Michael Carberry has revealed he thought the opportunity to represent his country at international level had passed after being overlooked for the tour of India last year.

The opener was in excellent form for county side Hampshire throughout the course of this season earning him a call-up for England's recent ODI series against Australia.

He notched a total of 93 runs in the last two one-day internationals earning him a call-up for the winter Ashes tour, but Carberry admitted he thought the chance to once again represent his country had passed.

ECB selector Geoff Miller has announced the England Ashes squad for the winter tour of Australia and there were some surprise selections included.

"At the start of the season I probably felt that when I didn't make the trip to India last year that maybe that ship had sailed and maybe England were moving in a different direction," he said.

"I just focused on getting some runs and I really didn't give it much thought going on the Ashes tour far less the ODI series."

"I literally just played and hit some nice form through the season and obviously it's got me some recognition.

"It's been a long road," he continued.

"I have had my fair share of ups and downs in the last three years and to come through it and get myself back in the test fold has taken a lot of mental strength and inner strength to get there, and a lot of support from people here, supporters, my coaches and my family so I'm pleased for everyone really."
