Kevin Pietersen is having a scan on a sore knee with the final Ashes Test match just a week away.
England are bidding to make history at the Oval next week by completing a first-ever 4-0 home series victory against Australia.
England head coach Andy Flower had already refused Pietersen permission to play for Surrey in the Twenty20 finals day this weekend in order to rest the calf niggle that has been troubling him since the second Test.
"He has played four Tests now and this is an opportunity to rest," said Flower. "It would have been nice to make him available for Surrey but in this instance we can't."
England will name their squad for the final Test on Saturday, while Australia head to Northampton for a two-day match against the England Lions which starts on Friday.
