Di Venuto, who played nine one-day matches for Australia, will leave his current positions as assistant coach at Tasmania and the Hobart Hurricanes Twenty20 side.
His first series with the team will be the forthcoming tour of Australia.
The national batting coach position became vacant when another former Australia opener, Justin Langer, quit to become head coach job at Western Australia in November.
The appointment comes a day after Australia legend Shane Warne issued his personal blueprint for the national side and made a blistering attack on the current coaching and management team.
Warne recommended former Test players Mike Hussey and Michael Bevan as batting coaches.
