Former Test skipper Ricky Ponting will captain the Prime Minister's XI against the West Indies in January.

Ponting is under pressure to hold his spot in Australia's Test side after struggling for form in the first two Tests against South Africa.

"It's a big honour for me to be selected as captain of the Prime Ministers XI," Ponting said.

"It will be an exciting team of emerging cricketers and I'm looking forward to leading them against the West Indies on 29 January."

The annual fixture will be played under lights for the first time, with the remainder of the side to be named in January.

Meanwhile, Australia coach Mickey Arthur says selectors have had no conversation about Ponting's future as they prepare for the third Test against South Africa.

"At the moment Ricky Ponting has the unanimous backing of the selection panel," Arthur said. "By his own admission Perth is a big Test for him. We want Ricky Ponting to go to the Ashes, there's no doubt about that."
