Darren Sammy of the West Indies and Ireland’s John Mooney have been fined 30 per cent of their match fees following Monday’s World Cup encounter.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) is attempting to crack down on poor on-field behaviour and the duo were sanctioned by match referee Chris Broad after Ireland had secured a four-wicket victory in Nelson.

The duo fell foul of Level 1 Article 2.1.4 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to ‘language or a gesture that is obscene, offensive or insulting during an International match’.

Sammy was heard on television using inappropriate language after playing a shot in the 34th over of the West Indies innings, while Mooney swore several times when a fielder dropped a catch off his bowling in the 45th over.

An ICC statement reported: “Both players admitted the offences and accepted the sanction proposed by match referee Chris Broad.

“As such, there was no need for a formal hearing.”

And Sammy, who scored 89, said: “I'd just like to apologise to the viewers for that, especially the young kids listening."
