Brian Lara has called for big changes within the West Indies cricket board after a payment dispute forced the tour of India to be cut short.

The tourists returned home this month before the end of a one-day series, with Twenty20 and Test matches still to be played, after failing to resolve the row between players and the WICB

India's cricket board (BCCI) responded by suspending all future tours involving the West Indies as well as taking legal action against the WICB, which could have a devastating financial impact on cricket in the region.

Lara proudly represented the Windies during his glittering international career and believes the governing body must carry out an internal review following this latest dispute.

“I would like for changes to be made administratively, because many changes have been made on the cricket field with cricketers - some careers have been affected by it. But I’ve not seen any great movement by the West Indies administrators.

“Something new will have to be done.

"If we keep coming up with the same problems all the time then you’ve got to look inward and see if we can do something differently, because they are in fact the ones who are controlling the game. If the game is in the situation it is now. Look into the mirror.”

Organisers are hopeful that the West Indies will still take part in next year’s World Cup and Lara is confident the rift will not disrupt the squad’s preparations.

“I don’t think the players will be greatly affected,” he said. “If this goes on for three to four months – you don’t expect something like that to fester for so long.

“I believe that the players will be in good shape for the South African tour, far more for the World Cup.”
