England bowlers backed to win the Ashes by Sir Ian Botham

Sir Ian Botham thinks England's bowlers can fire them to an Ashes win, predicting a result in every Test.

Speaking to Sky Sports News HQ, Botham also said he expects England all-rounder Ben Stokes to have a big say on the series.

“The first Test is crucial, but I think England can upset the apple cart and win,” said Botham, who played over 100 Test matches for England.

“It will only be by a Test, likely 3-2 either way. But if this weather stays there are probably going to be results in all five Tests and it will be very tight.

“If the bowlers turn up, James Anderson with over 400 Test wickets and Stuart Broad closing in on 300, plus Mark Wood, who I think is an exciting prospect, I think England can do it.

“Wood has something England haven’t had for a while. You have to go back to Steve Harmison in his pomp, they’ve got pace again as he can get it up into the mid-90s.

“And Ben Stokes could have a massive impact. He’s a genuine all-rounder, good enough to be in the team in both departments – bowling and batting – plus is an exceptional fielder.

The one area of England’s bowling Botham thinks could still be improved on is spin, and he would like to see Adil Rashid given a go after impressing in the one-day international series against New Zealand.

“I think in the first Test at Cardiff it will be interesting to see – in this dry weather – if the pitch turns, which I think it will,” Botham added. “Who are England going to pick? Personally I hope they go with Adil Rashid as it is always an advantage if a spinner can turn it both ways, which he can.

“The first day of that first Test is massive for both teams. Whoever can get off to the best start, that will give the dressing room a massive lift.”

“It’s very special the Ashes to be a part of. I think the players now have probably had enough talking about it and want to get involved in the action. It’s not that far away now.”
