Alastair Cook is expected to be confirmed as England's one-day captain, through to the end of the World Cup, on Wednesday.

Cook's place in the limited overs set-up has been under intense scrutiny after series losses to Sri Lanka and India this summer.

The opener has struggled for form, as he did for much of the Test series against India, but will continue to take charge of the side in Sri Lanka later this year and at the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

England will name their squad for the seven-match series in Sri Lanka on Wednesday, two days after the national selectors panel met to discuss strategies and plan for the busy winter of 50-over cricket.

After the trip to Sri Lanka, England head to Australia for a Tri-Series against the hosts and India to complete their warm-up for the World Cup.

Cook has been the subject of widespread criticism for his 50-over form, with the likes of Michael Vaughan and Graeme Swann saying the time had come for a change after a series of poor series performances.

Middlesex batsman Eoin Morgan and young Yorkshireman Joe Root were reported to be the main candidates to take over from the 29-year-old, who has been in charge for five one-day series defeats.

Devastated

Cook previously revealed he would be devastated to lose the captaincy before the World Cup which, despite their current form, he believes England have a chance of winning.

"I'm hoping to carry on. Of course I'd be devastated if I stop now but if they think it's the right decision for English cricket for me to go as one-day captain I'd have to accept it," Cook said in the Daily Mail.

"Yes my game has had a tough 12 months but I think we saw signs of real improvement in the Test series and I was starting to get there in the one-day games.

"What has frustrated me is getting a lot of starts without going on. If you turn one of those 40s to a 120 things change very quickly. I've just got to keep working on my game because I know it will turn back in my favour. I just know my record suggests I'm good enough to play international cricket."

England also have a number of selection issues to deal with for the trip to Sri Lanka, where they will find much different conditions to the ones they struggled with at home for much of the summer.

All-rounder Ravi Bopara could return after missing out on a place in the side for the five matches against India and there could also be a call for Surrey's Jason Roy, who made his Twenty20 international debut in the one-off match with India.

James Taylor will also be under consideration after a fine finish to the season with Nottinghamshire and Sky Sports cricket reporter Tim Abraham believes Adil Rashid could make a surprise return to the squad with England in need of a further spin-bowling option.
