Graham Onions has been summoned to join the England Lions tour of Sri Lanka.
The seam bowler replaces Durham team-mate Mark Wood, who is returning home after suffering a side injury during last week's warm-up game.
And Onions will now be in contention for the first of three four-day matches against Sri Lanka A, starting in Kandy on Wednesday.
Wood had made a good start to his tour following his call-up as a replacement for Somerset fast bowler Jamie Overton.
National selector James Whitaker said: "Mark had a very impressive start to the Lions tour taking five wickets in the first warm-up match.
"However, having been injured, it is very important that he has every chance of starting the season for Durham in the best possible condition.
"We have agreed with Durham that the best course of action is for Mark to return home.
"This presents a good opportunity for Graham to join up with the Lions and play an important role in their series against Sri Lanka ahead of the summer international series."
