Steven Finn enhanced his chances of selection for the third Test by taking four wickets for the England Performance Programme in Navi Mumbai.

Finn missed the first two Tests after sustaining a thigh strain during the first warm-up game of the tour, but was given a chance to prove his fitness in the three-day contest against the D Y Patil Academy XI which began on Tuesday and took 4-50.

The Middlesex paceman left the field several times over the course of the day but managed four spells of four overs each and did not appear to be hindered by the injury.

Encouraged by a wicket in his first over, Finn bowled at a lively pace on a fairly lifeless pitch and one of the Academy batsmen received a painful blow on the hand, an indication of the extra bounce Finn was getting.

With Stuart Broad having struggled in the second Test, Finn could well be in the team for the Third match in Kolkata if he is deemed fit enough for the rigours of a five-day Test.

Can England end their wait for success in India? They're 100/30 to win the series now here.

Bowling coach David Saker said of Finn prior to the Performance Programme match: "If he gets through unscathed and bowls well, his name will definitely be talked about for selection.

"He's got that x-factor, a bit of pace, and that height that always means you could get variable bounce over here."

After his efforts, Finn tweeted: "Good to be back on the park today. 16 overs is gonna hurt in the morning though".

Graham Onions, Joe Root, Stuart Meaker and Eoin Morgan are other members of the Test squad playing in Navi Mumbai but it was Lancashire spinner Simon Kerrigan who played second fiddle to Finn, taking 4-61.

Meaker finished with 1-34 but was unlucky not to take a couple of extra wickets while Onions gave away just 11 runs in his 14 overs.

Root then made 40 not out when England began their reply towards the end of the day.
