1977: Born on October 27 in Matale. 2000: July 5 - Makes his one-day international debut against Pakistan in Galle. July 20 - Makes his Test debut against South Africa in Galle. He makes 23 as Sri Lanka win by an innings and 115 runs. 2001: August - Makes his first Test century, an unbeaten 105, against India in Galle. 2003: Makes his first ODI century, an unbeaten 100, against Pakistan in Sharjah. 2005: October - Named in the World XI for the ICC Super Series ODIs against Australia. 2006: Steps down from wicketkeeping role in Tests, handing the gloves to Prasanna Jayawardene, to concentrate on batting. July - Makes his Test-best score of 287 in a Test match against South Africa at the SSC Ground in Colombo. In that game he and Mahela Jayawardene put on a world record partnership of 624 runs for the third wicket. 2007: December 6 - Scores of 92 and 152 in the first Test against England in Kandy elevate him to the number one position in the ICC Test batting rankings. 2008: April 28 - Scores 54 as Sri Lanka lose the final of the World Cup to Australia by 54 runs on the Duckworth-Lewis Method. 2009: February 3 - Suffers injuries after the Sri Lanka team bus comes under gunfire from terrorists as they travel to the second Test against Pakistan in Lahore. March 11 - Named Sri Lanka captain in place of Jayawardene. 2010: August 3 - Breaks the record as the fastest man to reach 8,000 runs in Test cricket, doing so in 152 innings. 2011: April 2 - Captains Sri Lanka to the ICC Cricket World Cup Final, which they lose to India by six wickets. July 4 - Delivers the 11th MCC Spirit of Cricket Cowdrey Lecture at Lord's, addressing the history of cricket in Sri Lanka and taking the country's board to task over the level of government interference. 2012: April 11 - Becomes the first man to be named one of Wisden's five cricketers of the year as well as the Almanack's leading cricketer in the world.
