Jimmy Adams' gutsy 74 not out to help Hampshire reach 165-8 on a rain-shortened first day of their LV= County Championship fixture against Gloucestershire.

Visiting skipper Adams did his best to hold the visitors together after he had won the toss and opted to bat first in the Division Two clash at Bristol.

At one stage Hampshire found themselves 97-8, but Danny Briggs (25 not out) joined skipper Adams in a fighting ninth-wicket stand that had reached 68 by the time bad weather cut short play.

Will Gidman claimed 2-14 from nine overs before being forced off with an ankle injury, debutant Michael Roberts and Liam Dawson his two victims as Hampshire slipped to 16-2.

George Bailey mustered 13 before becoming Craig Miles' first wicket, with the seamer also dismissing James Vince and Sean Ervine before lunch.

Adam Wheater missed a pull shot off a Jack Taylor long hop to fall lbw for eight to make it 68-6 at the break, while Chris Wood didn't last too long after the interval as David Payne had him caught at mid-on.

David Balcombe's attempts to sweep spinner Taylor only resulted in him being adjudged leg before having made 12, though Adams finally found a reliable partner when Briggs came to the crease.

The light became progressively poorer during the afternoon and the rain, which had been threatening, finally sent the players off at 3.26pm. Despite an early tea being taken, play was abandoned at 5.10pm.
