Lancashire batsman Steven Croft finished the first day of match against Leicestershire three runs short of a century.
The visitors were struggling at 156 for five at one stage at Grace Road but Croft's 97, which he compiled from 145 balls over three hours and 12 minutes, steadied the ship.
Valuable contributions also came from opener Paul Horton, who made 70 before behind caught behind by Niall O'Brien off the bowling of Tom Wells, as Lancashire ran up 356 for eight.
Jordan Clark scored 44 before succumbing to the same combination as Wells ended the day with figures of three for 68 from 15 overs.
Opening bowlers Clint McKay and Charlie Shreck have two wickets apiece so far.
