Leicestershire have signed former Derbyshire batsman Dan Redfern.

The 23-year-old left Derbyshire by mutual consent last summer and moves to Grace Road on a two-year contract.

He has a first-class average of 29.47 and has scored 3,213 runs.

"From a Championship point of view he is capable of batting anything from one to six and the fact that he is now adding off-spin to his skills gives more options out in the field."

Phil Whitticase on Dan Redfern

Leicestershire director of cricket Phil Whitticase said: "Looking at him, he gives us scope for all formats.

"We decided over the winter that we wanted to look at him rather than just take the decision to sign him.

"We got to know him and he got to know us. We just felt it was a great opportunity, having seen him perform in the nets, to bring him on board.

"From a Championship point of view he is capable of batting anything from one to six and the fact that he is now adding off-spin to his skills gives more options out in the field."

Redfern's best season was in 2012 when he scored 848 runs at 38.48, helping Derbyshire to promotion to Division One.

Last summer though he struggled to break into the first team, and also suffered with a hip problem. He scored just 185 runs at 14.15.

Redfern is Leicestershire's second signing ahead of the winter, with veteran fast bowler Charlie Shreck arriving from Kent.
