Ned Eckersley struck a century and passed 1,000 first-class runs for the season in the process to help Leicestershire reach stumps on 270-7 on day one of their Division Two clash with Worcestershire at Grace Road.

The 24-year-old Foxes batsman struck 106 to frustrate Worcestershire, who still harbour hopes of a top-two finish with four games left in the LV= County Championship season.

Eckersley came to the middle in the fifth over of the match after the ever-reliable Alan Richardson had claimed the wicket of Leicestershire opener Greg Smith for just one.

Niall O'Brien got himself in, and then out, for 31, and Shiv Thakor (9) fell soon after leaving Eckersley to hold up one end as Leicestershire slipped to 69-3 at lunch having won the toss.

Captain Josh Cobb proved the perfect foil for Eckersley after Tom Wells had been trapped lbw by Jack Shantry, the pair adding 92 for the fifth wicket to take Leicestershire towards their first batting point.

Cobb (44) succumbed to spin in the form of Moeen Ali and Eckersley failed to see out the day when he was bowled off his inside edge after attempting to leave Richardson with the second new ball still fresh.
