Nottinghamshire slumped to a 133-run defeat to Somerset after an astonishing day which saw 22 wickets fall at Trent Bridge.

Resuming the day on 195-8 in reply to 312, the hosts added 31 runs for their final two wickets for an 86-run deficit, but having then restricted Somerset to 161 in their second dig, they were then dismissed for 114 in their own second innings to earn Somerset victory inside three days.

Somerset's own second innings was beset by problems from the start - Vernon Philander bowling Marcus Trescothick for a five-ball duck at 4-1 before the weather closed in to send the players scurrying.

Once they returned, Philander picked up where he left off to remove Johann Myburgh for a six-ball duck at 4-2, and Luke Wood then took over, trapping both Tom Abell and Cooper lbw to leave the visitors 36-4 at lunch.

Four more wickets fell in regular succession throughout the afternoon session as five players reached the 20s before falling, Tim Groenewald the last man out shortly after tea following a breezy 21.

But any hopes Notts had of chasing down the target were ended as the top four all failed to make double figures, with only Riki Wessels (30) and Philander (35no) offering any resistance, Groenewald wrapping up the tail before the close on his way to claiming 4-41.

By stumps the visitors were 189-4 in their second innings, still 76 runs behind having earlier been dismissed for 185 in reply to the hosts 450.

Resmuming the day on 50-3 in their first innings, Durha failed to steady matters following a delayed start for rain, with Calum McLeod bowled by Richard Jones before Keith Barker took over with three wickets to dismiss Michael Richardson, Phil Mustard and Paul Coughlin.

That left Durham 91-7, which became 125-8 when John Hastings was adjudged lbw to Rikki Clarke and only a spirited fightback from Paul Collingwood (68) and Chris Rushworth (15) - who added 58 in 7 either side of lunch - prevented further success for the hosts.

But once Rushworth was bowled by Jones, Collingwood quickly followed - bowled by Boyd Rankin - and Barker then removed both Keaton Jennings and Scott Borthwick to leave Durham in the mire.

Mark Stoneman and Collingwood (16no) are their big hopes second time around.

Opener Stoneman is 83no from 161 balls having featured in a 72-run third-wicket stand with Michael Richardson (47), but it is Barker (3-55) once again doing the damage having claimed Richardson and before him, Jennings and Borthwick for a second time in the day.

Nick Compton's 23rd first-class century helped Middlesex avoid the follow-on although they were forced to concede a first-innings lead to Hampshire at the AGEAS Bowl in Southampton.

Compton his 18 fours in his 117 before being trapped lbw by Liam Dawson as the visitors, resuming the day on 102-3, were eventually dismissed for 362.

That left time for Hampshire to face nearly two overs in their second innings and they were 4-0 when bad light ended play for a lead of 55 runs.

Earlier, Middlesex saw James Franklin trapped in front by Fidel Edwards before Neil Dexter suffered the same fate to Gareth Berg, leaving them 178-5 at lunch.

Compton was given good support in the afternoon by John Simpson in the afternoon before the latter nicked Sean Ervine behind at 211-6.

Compton's wicket came at 269-7, but good resistance from Ollie Rayner (29 from 76 balls) was followed by a swashbuckling 61 off 60 by Toby Roland-Jones, who shared a last-wicket stand of 75 with an obdurate Steven Finn (18 off 63) to frustrate Hampshire and eat into their lead.

Ervine ended with figures of 3-37, while Edwards claimed 4-100 for the hosts.
