Jack Brooks helped Yorkshire take a major step towards claiming the LV=County Championship

Yorkshire took a major step towards claiming the LV= County Championship title, reducing Nottinghamshire to 58-4 by the end of day two in reply to 532-9.

The White Rose county – who know victory at Trent Bridge will secure the crown for the first time since 2001 – had finally declared their first innings when Tim Bresnan fell agonisingly short of a first century in seven years, the all-rounder caught at mid-wicket for 95.

He wasn’t the only Tyke to miss out on reaching three figures, team-mate Gary Ballance having been dismissed for 99 in the first session of play when he was trapped leg before by Gary Keedy.

The left-arm spinner, recently summoned out of retirement by Nottinghamshire from his role as physio, finished with figures of 5-163 from his 50 overs, Jack Leaning (42) and Steve Patterson (17) his other victims on Wednesday.

Nottinghamshire’s reply soon found trouble, Jack Brooks getting Alex Hales caught behind for a duck before then going on to remove Samit Patel before he too had troubled the scorers.

Ryan Sidebottom backed up his new-ball partner by getting Steven Mullaney and James Taylor caught in the slips. Michael Lumb was 35 not out at the close with Rikki Wessels unbeaten on 14, though the hosts now know their own hopes of being crowned champions are over.

Trott ton

Warwickshire could be the only team with a mathematical chance of yet catching the current Division One leaders, and they look on course to heap more misery on already relegated Northamptonshire.

Jonathan Trott and Sam Hain hit unbeaten hundreds as the Bears – still in with a chance of completing the treble – closed on 413-3, meaning they lead by 140 at the halfway stage.

Varun Chopra and William Porterfield had resumed in the morning but neither was able to kick on, the former falling in the sixth over for 53. Porterfield was then adjudged lbw to spinner James Middlebrook when on 24, leaving the score at 142-3.

However Trott, whose undefeated 128 was his first ton at Edgbaston since he left England’s Ashes Tour last winter, and Hain (148no) combined in an unbroken fourth-wicket partnership of 271, a new record against Northants.

At the other end of the table, Lancashire fought back in the final session against Sussex to boost their hopes of avoiding relegation.

Ed Joyce passed 1,000 runs for the season and 15,000 career runs in a chanceless 137, while half-centuries from Chris Nash (67) and Craig Cachopa (50) helped the hosts at one stage reach 240-2 at Hove in reply to the Red Rose county's first-innings total of 320.

However Lancashire picked up five wickets for 56 runs to reduce Sussex to 341-7 by stumps, meaning a slender lead of 21 runs.

Durham continued their end-of-season revival by claiming a first-innings lead at Lord's against Middlesex, who themselves are still not certain of safety.

Dawid Malan made 97 but the hosts - who sit level with their current opponents in the table on 150 points, 12 ahead of Lancashire - at one stage slipped to 202-8 in reply to Durham's total of 377.

Toby Roland-Jones offered some lower-order resistance with 49 before falling to Paul Collingwood. He had put on 72 with Tim Murtagh who was then the last wicket to fall in the innings, handing the away county a 101-run advantage.

Durham added a further 28 runs to that before the end of proceedings though not without losing opener Keaton Jennings for a duck. They had started the day at the crease too, Scott Borthwick eventually falling for 176 as their final three wickets added 29 runs to their overnight total of 341-7.
