CCD1: Tom Fell hands initative to Worcestishire against Middlesex

Tom Fell was unbeaten on 75 at stumps on day two as Worcestershire took charge of their match against Middlesex at Uxbridge after recovering from (8-1).

Middlesex were only able to add 20 runs to their overnight total of 289-7 with Joe Leach (4-81) cleaning up tailenders Olly Raynor (25), James Harris (1) and Toby Roland-Jones (0).

But Harris (1-54) drew an edge from Richard Oliver (6) as Middlesex forced an early breakthrough during the Worcestershire reply. Skipper Daryl Mitchell (18) was the next man to fall as Worcestershire found themselves 52-2 after 29 overs.

But Moeen Ali (54) and Fell put on 60 runs for the third wicket before the England all-rounder was caught by Roland-Jones off the bowling of James Franklin (1-27).

Tom Fell's unbeaten 75 and Moeen Ali's 52 led the charge for Worcestershire against Middlesex, whilst Stuart Broad top scored with 34 for Nottinghamshire.

Fell’s knock included 12 boundaries with the 21-year-old ably supported by Alex Gidman at the other end, who finished the day unbeaten on 30.

Yorkshire paceman Tim Bresnan terrorised Nottinghamshire’s batsmen as they slumped to 169-8 on a rain-affected first day at Headingley.

Bresnan claimed the wickets of Michael Lumb (7) and Nottinghamshire top-scorer Stuart Broad (34) as he posted figures of (2-32), with an economy rate of less than three runs.

There was also two wickets apiece for Ryan Sidebottom (2-41), Steven Patterson (2-41) and Jack Brooks (2-47) as Yorkshire put in an impressive bowling performance on home turf.

Steven Mullaney (28), Brendan Taylor (29) and Rikki Wessels (33) headed the resistance for Nottinghamshire but they face a battle to wrestle control of the game over the next three days.

Somerset recovered from the loss of four early wickets to force the follow on as they took control of their match against Hampshire in Southampton.

Somerset resumed at 310-6 on day two but were skittled out for 346, with Gareth Berg (4-64) dismissing Lewis Gregory (17), Craig Overton (17) and Abdur Rehman (0).

But Craig Overton (4-45) ripped through the Hampshire batting order, dismissing Liam Dawson (25) Will Smith (4), Berg (38) and Danny Briggs (8).

The 21-year-old was ably complemented by Alfonso Thomas (3-38) who claimed the wickets of Jimmy Adams (1), Sean Terry (8) and Michael Carberry (6). Lewis Gregory (2-54) and Jim Allenby (1-14) took the other wickets as Hampshire were forced to bat again.

They finished the day 41-2 after openers Adams (5) and Terry (19) were clean bowled by Thomas and Peter Trego respectively.
