Nick Compton has rejoined Middlesex a month after leaving Somerset.

The England batsman has signed a three-year contract and returns to the county where he came through the ranks and spent eight years before leaving in 2009.

Compton - grandson of Middlesex and England great Denis - ended his five-year spell with Somerset in November despite having two years to run on his deal and made it clear he wanted to be nearer his south west London base.

His performances while a Taunton earned him England recognition, although the last of nine Test appearances came more than 18 months ago.

He said: "Returning to Middlesex as a senior player is an exciting challenge for me, one I am really looking forward to.

"Lord’s is the Home of Cricket and with my family ties here the time feels right to return. The prospect of playing and scoring runs at Lord’s has always excited me and hopefully I can come back and reproduce my best cricket here."

Middlesex director of cricket Angus Fraser said: "We are delighted to welcome Nick back to Middlesex. Players of Nick’s ability do not become available very often and when we were made aware of his desire to move back to London we immediately moved.
