Former Zimbabwe skipper Dave Houghton is to step down as the batting coach for Somerset.

The county's new director of cricket Matthew Maynard has opted to take responsibility for the role himself.

Maynard has made his name as a batting coach, having once fulfilled the role with England, and now intends to make the job part of his brief at Taunton and has let former Zimbabwe captain Houghton go.

Maynard said: "Dave Houghton has a wealth of knowledge and experience which he has freely shared with the players here at Somerset.

"He has made a great contribution during his time at the club. However, there is no necessity for two specialist batting coaches, which is a shame because I have worked with Dave at the ECB and I know what he has to offer."

Houghton added: "Of course I am disappointed to be leaving but I can understand the necessity for change and wish the club every success for the future."
