Somerset have confirmed the signing of Tim Groenewald from Derbyshire who joins on an initial loan until the end of the season before the move turns into a permanent three-year deal.

The South Africa-born right-arm bowler has played a total of 89 domestic first-class matches and has turned out for both Derbyshire and Warwickshire since 2006.

The 30-year-old, who has managed only four first-class appearances for Derbyshire this season, has career best match figures of 8/97 and a highest score of 78 runs with the bat.

“I am absolutely delighted to be joining Somerset as it is a club I’ve held in high regard for many years,” Groenwald said.

“I couldn’t be happier committing the next three years to the club and I can’t wait to get started.”

Somerset’s director of cricket, Dave Nosworthy, said: “Signing a bowler of Tim’s quality for the remainder of the season and then for the next three years is great news for the club.

“Tim has been on our ‘look-out’ list for some time and it is fantastic to be able to add him to a talented crop of quality bowlers at the club.
