Nick Compton is set to play for Worcestershire against Australia next week as he continues to fight for a place in England's Ashes Test team.

Compton was left out of a 14-man England squad to face Essex, starting Sunday, but responded to his omission with an innings of 81 against the Australians at Taunton on Wednesday.

The 30-year-old Somerset right-hander, who has slipped down the pecking order behind Joe Root, now still has a chance to win a place in the side when turning out for Worcestershire in a four-day fixture with the tourists on July 2.

England face Australia in the opening Ashes Test at Trent Bridge, which gets underway on 10 July.
