Jack Leaning's first century for Yorkshire in any form of cricket could not prevent his side crashing to defeat against Essex in a high-scoring Royal London One-Day Cup at Scarborough.

The 20-year-old's unbeaten 111 helped Yorkshire to a challenging 290-6 off their 50 overs - but Essex opener Tom Westley and Ryan ten Doeschate plundered centuries of their own to give their team a five-wicket success.

Westley and his captain shared a mammoth fifth-wicket stand of 209 in 31 overs - a partnership only eight runs short of being the highest against Yorkshire for any wicket in one-day cricket.

Westley's 111 was also his maiden List A ton, while ten Doeschate blasted 119 from 101 balls with nine fours and six sixes.

Essex's victory, with 25 balls to spare, moved them joint top of the Group A table with Yorkshire, leaving both sides in with an excellent chance of making it through to the quarter-finals.

Derbyshire moved into the top four in the table thanks to a six-run triumph over Northamptonshire on the Duckworth/Lewis Method at Wantage Road.

Wes Durston hit 108 from just 94 deliveries to help the visitors amass 211-6 from 32 overs, their innings having been held up for just over three hours following a torrential downpour.

Marcus North made 43 as he and Durston put on 100 in 13 overs against a home attack minus the services of David Willey - away playing for the England Lions - and the injured duo of Steven Crook and Olly Stone.

Northamptonshire were set a revised target of 227 and despite 62 from Richard Levi at the top of the order, ended up falling just short at 220-9, Tony Palladino picking up three wickets on the day it was announced he had signed a contract extension.

Only 25 balls were possible at the Ageas Bowl where Hampshire quickly rattled up 42 without loss against Worcestershire in a match eventually abandoned due to heavy showers.

Michael Carberry was left stranded on 30 not out and Sean Terry unbeaten with ten.

Each side picked up a point from the soggy debacle but neither will benefit greatly. Hampshire have now won only the once in six of their eight matches and Worcestershire have triumphed twice, but both need to win their remaining two matches to stand a chance of finishing in Group A's top four and with it a place in the quarter-finals.
