Essex have signed New Zealand opener Hamish Rutherford as their replacement for injured overseas star Rob Quiney.

Rutherford is in England for the Test series, which starts on Thursday at Lord's, and he will link up with the county as soon as his international commitments are out of the way.

Quiney was forced to call a premature end to his first stint in county cricket when he injured his shoulder taking a catch last week against Lancashire - he will be out of action for about three months.

Coach Paul Grayson said: "We are delighted to be signing Hamish and we welcome him to the club.

Impressed

"The coaching staff and myself look forward to working with him and pleased that he is joining Essex. He is an attacking opening batsman that will definitely benefit us in both the Yorkshire Bank 40 competition and Friends Life t20 too.

"I was very impressed with how he played for New Zealand this winter against England and Hamish comes highly recommended from some good judges in the game, so will be a great acquisition for us I'm sure."

Rutherford has played club cricket in England and Scotland but his stint at Chelmsford will be his first at the County level.

He has made an impressive start to his international cricket career as well, scoring 171 on debut in Dunedin in March, and he piled up an impressive 126 against the England Lions at Grace Road last week.
