Jonny Bairstow and Tim Bresnan rewrote the record books with an unbeaten 366-run stand to put Yorkshire in total control against County Championship title rivals Durham.

The duo both recorded career-best scores - Bairstow unbeaten on 219 and Bresnan 169 not out as their 80-over partnership took the Tykes to 557-6 on day two at the Emirates ICG.

It was also the largest seventh-wicket total in championship history, with Bairstow's leading role doing his outside Ashes prospects the power of good.

Durham were in disarray at the close, reduced to 140-5 - Bresnan adding a wicket to his batting heroics - and even that would have been much worse but for an unbroken 59-run stand between Scott Borthwick (35no) and Ryan Pringle (34no).

Coming together at 81-5, the pair saw the hosts to stumps without further setback, but they still face a huge task to avoid the follow-on from here.

The visitors were also firmly in charge at Edgbaston, where Sussex turned their overnight 280-3 into a formidable 601-6dec on day two against Warwickshire.

Luke Wright (110), Ben Brown (119no) and Ashar Zaidi (106) all followed day one centurion Chris Nash's lead in establishing Sussex's dominant position, with leg-spinner Josh Poysden, playing his fifth first-class match, left nursing figures of 1-165 from 40.4 overs.

Resuming the day on 59-0, having skittled the visitors for 176 on day one, Middlesex were soon 62-2 as both openers fell and when Eoin Morgan was caught off Bradley Wheal (3-83) for a second-ball duck, they were 100-4.

But Nick Compton was impressive for his 87, sharing a 111-run stand with John Simpson (64) before being undone by Danny Briggs.

Jackson Bird accounted for Simpson, with Ollie Rayner (34no) reaching the close in the hope of pushing the lead on towards 200 on Tuesday.

James Taylor could make only eight before he was trapped in front by Joe Leach and, after Brendan Taylor's vigil - he made 69 from 120 balls - was brought to an end by Jack Shantry - Charlie Morris claimed Samit Patel, Chris Read and Brett Hutton to leave them 170-7.

Ed Barnard removed Ben Hilfenhaus to make that 170-8 and only a final-wicket stand of 50 between Riki Wessels (65) and Andy Carter (24no) pushed the total towards respectability.

The visitors' reply began well, with Daryl Mitchell and Richard Oliver putting on 83 for the opening wicket before the Mitchell was trapped in front by Australian Hilfenhaus.

The seamer then bowled Charlie Morris at 89-2 with the last ball of the day to give the Pears some late cheer.
