Middlesex's slim LV= County Championship title hopes were further diminished after rain washed out the third day of their clash with Nottinghamshire at Lord's.

Middlesex were due to resume their first innings at 96 for no wicket in reply to Nottinghamshire's 430-7 declared, with Chris Rogers on 67 and his opening partner Sam Robson on 28.

But following a frustratingly slow day of drizzle, inspections and intermittent groundstaff activity play was called off at 4.15pm without a ball being bowled.

That has meant any hope of a result - a draw would be useful for Nottinghamshire's bid to stay away from the relegation scrap - would have to be engineered on a final day when rain is also forecast.

With a lead of 334, Nottinghamshire are in a position to do an overnight deal if they want to try to force a positive result.

They could, perhaps, propose an immediate Middlesex declaration and their own second innings forfeiture, thus leaving the hosts a second innings chase over a minimum fourth-day requirement of 80 overs.

Sadly, however, the weather forecast for London suggests more rain - and plenty of it - so the odds are very much on this game ending in a watery draw.

Such an outcome would be the end of third-placed Middlesex's mathematical hopes of being able to finish as county champions.

The additional three points for the draw would be useful to Nottinghamshire, who began this round of games still in danger of being dragged into the two relegation places at the bottom of Division One.

With their four batting bonus points already in the bag, sixth-placed Nottinghamshire would take seven from a draw - even if there was no chance of gaining any bowling points from a resumption of the Middlesex first innings on the final day - and this would lift their overall tally to 130.
