Daryl Mitchell's fifth championship hundred of the season guided Division Two leaders Worcestershire to 299-7 after they elected to bat first on the opening day against Gloucestershire at Cheltenham.
Mitchell hit 13 fours and remained unbeaten on 102 from 228 deliveries at the close.
His opening partner Richard Oliver set an early tone with 10 fours in his 49-ball 62 and Mitchell later put on 102 for the fifth wicket with Ben Cox (56) after Worcestershire had been reduced to 140-4.
Gloucestershire seamer Craig Miles (4-53) and left-arm spinner Tom Smith (3-68) accounted for all of the wickets.
At Guildford, Jason Roy and Gary Wilson rescued Surrey from early trouble in reply to Kent's first-innings 408 on day two.
The sixth-wicket pair shared a stand of 121 after Surrey had slumped to 105-5, including two wickets for medium pacer Darren Stevens (2-83).
Seamer Charlie Hartley (2-55) trapped Roy lbw for 84 but Wilson's 80 not out saw Surrey up to 303-6, still 105 behind, at the close.

Derbyshire are on the brink of victory after wickets continued to tumble on day two against Glamorgan at Derby.
The home side closed on 13-1 chasing a victory target of 73 following good work from left-arm seamer Mark Footitt earlier in the day.
Footitt claimed career-best figures of 6-48 as Glamorgan were bowled out for 175 in their second innings, Will Owen's 28 from No 10 the top score.
Derbyshire had resumed in the morning on 142-6 in their first innings and a ninth-wicket stand of 73 between David Wainwright (35) and Tony Palladino (33) helped them to 241 all out, a first-innings lead of 103.
