Worcestershire are in talks with Phil Hughes in a bid to bring the Australian batsman back to New Road as their overseas player for the 2013 campaign.

Hughes finished top of the county's averages in all formats of the game last season, although a return will depend on Hughes' international commitments.

Royals director of cricket Steve Rhodes has been on a 10-day trip to Australia to discuss the situation with Hughes and his representatives.

Worcestershire chief executive David Leatherdale said: "We've held initial talks with Phil and his representative, which was the main purpose of Steve's trip to Australia.

"Those discussions will be ongoing. We are keen to have Phil back and he has made it clear to us that he is keen to come back.

"He came here with a purpose last season to show what he could do, demonstrated he was a gritty character and played well in all forms of cricket.

"But it will depend on his commitments with Australia. He is currently on the fringe of the international set-up.

"If he performs well this winter he could be pushing forward for a place."
