Arun Harinath hit a classy century for Surrey against Glamorgan but the visitors were given some late hope at Guildford.
The home side were cruising at 273 for five with a lead of 242 thanks to Harinath's (104) second century of the match while standing in for the injured Rory Burns.
The left-hander became the first Surrey player since Mark Ramprakash in 2007 to score two centuries in a county championship match and did so from 156 balls.
It was a confident knock and put the home side in a good position but Gary Wilson fell for 54 and Gareth Batty (0) and Tom Curran (0) soon followed.
Michael Hogan (5-44) has been the pick of the Glamorgan attack and the state of play going into the final day is that Surrey have a lead of 245 and two wickets remaining.
