Relegation-threatened Surrey reached 59-2 in the 17.5 overs of play that were possible on the opening day of their LV= County Championship clash with Warwickshire at Edgbaston.

After being put in by their hosts, Surrey's innings got off to a disastrous start when they lost both openers for a combined total of four runs.

Keith Barker removed Dominic Sibley with his 11th ball of the day, trapping the teenage batsman lbw before he had managed to trouble the scorers.

The left-arm seamer also saw off Rory Burns in similar fashion, leaving the visitors on 18-2 with the floodlights on.

However, Hashim Amla and Vikram Solanki put on an unbroken alliance that was worth 41 by the time the players were forced off the field due to rain.

South African Amla finished off Chris Woakes' opening spell with successive boundaries and apart from an edged four off Maurice Chambers, he had eased his way to 30 not out by the time the bad weather closed in.

Solanki, meanwhile, was unbeaten on 20 having had to deal with a Warwickshire attack that was unable to include Boyd Rankin, the England international being ruled out with an ankle injury.

The forecast is not great for Thursday, which is a concern for Surrey considering they need to win to have a chance of staying in the top flight.
