Andrew Gale scored his first century of the season and England wicketkeeper Jonathan Bairstow fell five short as Yorkshire continued to dictate proceedings on day two of their LV= County Championship match against Durham.
Yorkshire captain Gale, who left himself out of the squad to face Middlesex last week, converted his overnight score of 35 into triple figures in a stand of 180 with Bairstow, who fell agonising short of a century when he was trapped lbw by Chris Rushworth.
Gale became Yorkshire’s second centurion he struck 10 fours on his way to 124, before being caught behind and when Durham paceman Graham Onions dismissed Tim Bresnan and Liam Plunkett in successive balls, the Yorkshire captain declared at 589-8.
Durham made a confident start before Ryan Sidebottom had Keaton Jenning caught behind for nine, leaving Mark Stoneman – unbeaten on 48 – and Scott Borthwick at the crease with the hosts 62-1 when bad light stopped play.
At Old Trafford, Michael Yardy could only add seven to his overnight total of 132 as Sussex were bowled out for 298 by Lancashire.
Shortly after Yardy’s departure, Simon Kerrigan had Jon Lewis trapped lbw with the visitors only managed to add 22 to their overnight total.
Lancashire’s response stuttered as Sussex opener Steve Magoffin (3-31) dismissed their top three of Paul Horton, Louis Reece and Karl Brown with only 38 runs on the board.
All-rounder Tom Smith (45 not out) teamed up with 19-year-old wicketkeeper Alex Davies (41 not out) to forge an unbeaten stand of 74 and wrestle the hosts back into contention as they finished the day 157-6.
Veteran duo Marcus Trescothick and Alfonso Thomas rolled back the years as Somerset fought their way back into contention on day two of their Division One clash with Nottinghamshire at Taunton.
Nottinghamshire looked set for a formidable first-innings total after amassing 382-5 on the first day, but they could only add another 58 runs on Monday morning before being dismissed for 440 as Thomas ran through the visitors to finish with figures of 5-127.
Captain Trescothick, fresh from making his first championship century since 2012 against Sussex last week, then struck 72 in reply as Somerset reached 237-4 by the close, with Alviro Petersen (62) and Craig Kieswetter (32) the not-out batsmen.
Tim Ambrose smashed an impressive 167 to fire Warwickshire into a commanding 295-run lead over Middlesex on day two of their match at Edgbaston.
Warwickshire were bowled out for 462 but not before Ambrose had put his team firmly in the driving seat with an explosive innings that came in 269 balls and included 20 fours.
The 31-year-old was ably supported by Jeetan Patel, who made 105, and later Chris Wright, who hit a useful 52 as the tail maximised Middlesex's frustration.
It was certainly the batting side's day, but there were two more wickets for Steven Finn (2-84) and Dawid Malan (2-16).
Middlesex sent nightwatchman James Harris and regular opener Sam Robson out to face the final over of the day, both came through unscathed and without a run at the close of play.
