Sussex were frustrated in their bid to strengthen their position at the top of the Championship table after rain washed out the opening day of their game against Surrey at Arundel Castle.
Morning drizzle frustrated hopes of making a prompt start before heavy rain set in after the players had taken an early lunch.
Umpires Steve Gale and Michael Gough carried out two further inspections before play was abandoned at 2.45pm.
When the game does start, Sussex will have to decide whether to recall left-arm spinner Monty Panesar who is fit again after missing last week's draw with Middlesex because of a shoulder injury.
Panesar has had a cortisone injection and has been named in their squad.
