Ajmal Shahzad produced a sensational bowling spell as Sussex beat Worcestershire by 61 runs at the BrightonandHoveJobs.com County Ground.

Former England all-rounder Shahzad tore through the visitors' batting line-up as they chased only 200 for victory on the final day.

Worcestershire started the day 47-0, needing to reach 247, but lost captain Daryl Mitchell (21) and first innings centurion Richard Oliver for 27 inside the first five overs, Steve Magoffin starting things off before Shahzad grabbed his first wicket.

The former Yorkshire seamer proceeded to get the next two wickets to help wipe out Worcestershire's middle-order, accounting for Alex Gidman (7) and Tom Kohler-Cadmore for a duck, before Matt Hobden trapped Alexei Kervezee in front to reduce them to 91-5.

Ashar Zaidi claimed the wicket of their final specialist batsman - Tom Fell - for 21and Shahzad returned to claim his five-fer, bowling Gareth Andrew (7) and having Sachithra Senanayake caught behind for one.

With the score on 134-9, all hope appeared to have gone for Worcestershire, but their 10th wicket pairing - wicketkeeper Ben Cox and bowler Charlie Morris - briefly rekindled hopes of an away victory.

Cox made it to 48 and Morris added 24 in a 51-run stand, but the latter was eventually dismissed by Luke Wells as Sussex secured a 22-point haul.
