Matt Coles routed the Derbyshire batting order with five wickets for just 13 runs to put Kent in a commanding position in their County Championship Division Two match at Canterbury.

Coles took three wickets - for no runs - in his first two overs before adding two more for 13 and Darren Stevens took another two, for 16, to leave Derbyshire in all kinds of trouble on 67-7 at stumps in the opening day.

Only Wes Durston contributed any resistance, making 35 before being lbw to Stevens, although the ship was steadied slightly late in the day by Tom Poynton (19no) and Tony Palladino (11no).

Earlier, Sam Northeast made a combative 85 after Kent had lost two wickets in the first over of the day.

Joe Denly added a very useful 30 after Mark Footitt snared Daniel Bell-Drummond and Robert Key lbw at a cost of just two runs to put the home side firmly on the back foot.

Footitt took four wickets in total, for 45, and Palladino bowled well to bag 3-19.
