Northamptonshire batsman David Sales is to retire at the end of the season after a 19-year career in professional cricket.

Sales, 36, first made his name by becoming the youngest person to score a double hundred in the County Championship when he scored 210 not out against Worcestershire at the age of 18 in 1996.

He has gone on to make over 20,000 runs for Northants in all formats of the game and has represented England Lions, although he could not break through into the senior England team.

"I've thoroughly enjoyed my career and the last 20 years at Northants Cricket, and whilst disappointed that I didn't play at the very highest level, I will look back with pride at my achievements," he said.

Northants head coach David Ripley said Sales' retirement signals the end of an era at the club.
