Adil Rashid waits on England call with Trevor Bayliss set to name first Test squad

Adil Rashid will be hoping to win a call up the England squad for the first Ashes Test when it is announced by new coach Trevor Bayliss on Wednesday.

Despite his brief to bring new ideas to English cricket, Bayliss and his selectors are understandably unlikely to make sweeping changes to the side to face Australia, but Rashid's stock has risen sharply in recent weeks.

The Yorkshire leg-spinner was not part of the 14-man squad taken to Spain for a pre-Ashes training camp and was an unused tourist on the winter tour of West Indies.

But he has followed his impressive displays in England's ODI series win over New Zealand with further good form for his county and he could be included in England's preliminary squad alongside incumbent spinner Moeen Ali.

Moeen struggled with the ball in the drawn two-Test series against the Black Caps, although it would still be a surprise if he failed to make the team to face Australia.

Elsewhere in the team, the batsmen largely pick themselves, with the top six well set.

Adam Lyth should continue as Alastair Cook's opening partner, with Gary Ballance and Ian Bell behind them, although Michael Vaughan has led calls for those two to swap positions.

Either way, Joe Root should bat at five with Ben Stokes at six.

Jos Buttler is set to keep wicket and bat seven provided he has recovered from the hand injury that kept him out of the final ODI clash with New Zealand.

The state of his fitness will be revealed by whether Jonny Bairstow, the hero of that series-clinching ODI victory and a double-centurion for Yorkshire this week, is included.

James Anderson and Stuart Broad, England's most successful opening bowling pair, should lead the pace attack and will likely be backed up by Mark Wood and Stokes, leaving Steven Finn, Liam Plunkett and Mark Footitt to battle it out for 12th man duties in south Wales.
