England will chase a revised 192 from 26 overs to win the final one-day international and the series against New Zealand.

The tourists were restricted to 283-9 after being asked to post a score in Durham conditions never likely to oblige a repeat of the free-for-alls seen earlier in the series.

And a lengthy delay between innings stiffened England's task as the Duckworth-Lewis table came up with a new target representing a run rate of more than seven an over.

Overhead gloom and the discipline of the England bowlers each played a part in New Zealand's relatively modest score, Steve Finn, Adil Rashid and David Willey collecting two wickets each and local boy Ben Stokes finishing with three after drizzle had pushed back the start time.

But Finn's final over went for 22 as some clean, late hitting from Ben Wheeler helped New Zealand set a competitive target - albeit the lowest of the series.

Brendon McCullum emerged in the morning as though the delay was a personal affront, clouting Finn over midwicket for a third-ball six, but the bowler exacted revenge the very next delivery as the Kiwi captain played on trying to force one through the covers.

Martin Guptill and Kane Williamson rebuilt with a 94 stand as both passed 50, Williamson reaching the mark for the fourth time in the series before departing in similar fashion to McCullum, Stokes the bowler this time.

Guptill went on to 67 from 73 balls before nicking Stokes to Jonny Bairstow, deputising behind the stumps after Jos Buttler's damaged hand saw him ruled out.

That left New Zealand on 150-3, and just five more were added by the time Mitchell Santner gave Rashid the charge and missed a perfect leg-break.

Ross Taylor and Grant Elliott shared 55 but went in successive overs, another Rashid beauty giving Bairstow a simple stumping to remove Elliott and Taylor steering Willey behind.

Luke Ronchi did not hang about, miscuing a drive off Willey to mid-off, and Tim Southee's enterprising cameo was ended on 18 when Stokes located his leg stump.

It was left to Wheeler (39 not out) to get the score up, Finn's final two balls disappearing over the ropes after he had removed Matt Henry.
