Championship leaders Middlesex out for 212 as wickets tumble at Headingley

England batsmen Gary Ballance and Adam Lyth were out for 1 and 17 runs respectively as they returned for Yorkshire to face Middlesex in Division One

County Championship leaders Middlesex were skittled out for 212 before restricting defending champions Yorkshire to 96-4 as the bowlers dominated on day one at Headingley.

Jack Brooks led the way for the home side, taking 5-44 as Middlesex were reduced to 119-6.

Former England batsmen Nick Compton (70) and Sam Robson (41) top-scored but current internationals Gary Ballance and Adam Lyth fared less well in Yorkshire’s reply.

Opener Lyth, who scored his first Test century at the same ground just over a week earlier, was dismissed by Toby Roland-Jones for 17.

Ballance, whose technique has been questioned this season, continues to struggle for runs after being trapped lbw by Tim Murtagh for just one.

Wicketkeeper Jonathan Bairstow (25no) and Jack Leaning (20no) steadied the ship before the close, though.

Second-placed Durham struggled on the first day of their clash with Somerset at the Emirates ICG as they were dismissed for 189 having opted to bat first.

Opener Keaton Jennings led the way with 49 before being dismissed by Tim Groenewald (3-37), a wicket that led to the loss of four wickets for as many runs.

But it was Craig Overton (4-40) who did the most damage, with the fast bowler counting Durham skipper Paul Collingwood among his victims as he trapped the experienced campaigner leg before for a duck.

Somerset reached 147-4 at stumps, with Johann Myburgh (57no) leading the charge against his former county.

Meanwhile, in the day’s other Division One match, Sussex posted 251 before Hampshire finished the day 116-4 at Hove.

Sussex all-rounder Gareth Berg finished with figures of 4-67, while Australia bowler Jackson Bird (3-69) polished off the tail.

Bottom club Hampshire were boosted by a half-century (52no) from James Vince in their reply, after they had been reduced to 99-4.
